Basic information Chur

Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland. It is thought to have been a settlement over 10,000 years ago, and this history is ever present – above all in the old town. At the same time, however, the capital of Graubünden has transformed itself in recent years from a sleepy town of ancient guilds to a youthful city.The locals claim that their city has more places to eat and drink per square mile than anywhere else in the country. Indeed, Chur's nightlife caters to all tastes, from traditional restaurants to hip clubs. Stars such as Gimma, Sektion Kuchikäschtli, and Breitbild have raised Chur's game as the home of one of Switzerland's most vibrant and successful hip-hop scenes.

Chur has no shortage of all kinds of culture. The Chur Theater, formerly the municipal theater, has been making headlines internationally over the past few years. The Bündner Kunstmuseum, the Rhätisches Museum, and the Naturmuseum offer insights into the cultural diversity of Graubünden and its rich history.

Chur likes to call itself "the biggest shopping center between Zurich and Milan." Its picturesque and well-preserved old town boasts many small shops and boutiques, while Bahnhofstrasse – now a popular place to hang out – is home to the large department stores and fashion outlets.

Being located between several world-famous ski resorts, Chur is also an ideal base for sports enthusiasts. The Brambrüesch cable car takes you right from the middle of the city into the neighbouring mountains to get closer to nature in winter and summer alike.
