With a population of 50,000 in the city itself and more than 100,000 in the metro area, Biel-Bienne is the urban center of the Three Lakes region. It is also an important center for the watch and communication industries. World-famous watch brands such as Omega, Rolex, and Swatch are based here. Typical features of Biel-Bienne are the urban Zentralplatz, the bilingual street signs, and the beautiful old town, which is a residential area as well as a magnet for tourists.
Sporty people have the largest free training park in Switzerland right at their doorstep: Everything is possible, from biking and climbing in the Jura mountains to rowing on the lake or rollerblading through the lake-land countryside. A new 80 million franc stadium complex will soon offer lots of space for sports clubs and plenty of action on its hockey, curling, and football pitches. Before then, however, football fans and party people will be getting together in June 2008 in the fan zone and the UBS ARENA right next to the station.
